Article: TOO PRETTY TO BE SCARY

TOO PRETTY TO BE SCARY

Halloween dressing has always had a flair for the dramatic. Black lace, velvet, shadowy florals, and colors that look as though they belong in a gothic romance. But somewhere between the elaborate costumes and theatrical makeup, there’s a wardrobe worth exploring beyond October 31.

What if dressing for the occasion wasn’t about becoming someone else, but exploring a different side of your own style? Think lace that belongs at brunch rather than a masquerade ball. Sheer details that reveal just enough. Florals that trade their cheerful summer palette for something moodier. And jewel tones that feel right at home with the season.

This year, we’re borrowing a few familiar elements and making them our own. No costumes required.

UNDER A LACE SPELL

Lace has a certain old-world charm, especially in deeper shades. It might call to mind gothic gowns and Victorian romance, but there’s plenty to love about it beyond the theatrics. A navy midi dress with a lace bodice brings an ornate touch to a simple silhouette. Skip the elaborate accessories and let the intricate pattern speak for itself.

SHEER OBSESSION

There’s something appealing about an outfit that leaves a few things to the imagination. Sheer fabrics can be surprisingly understated when used in the right places. Take a green dress with sheer sleeves. The contrast between the delicate sleeves and the rest of the dress gives it an unexpected twist, without making it feel overly dressed up. Perfectly suited for an afternoon out or an evening gathering.

DARK BLOOM ENERGY

Not every flower belongs in a sunlit garden. Some look considerably more interesting after dark.

Against the softness of an oat-colored top, black floral appliqués stand out in the best way. The contrast gives an otherwise sweet detail a slightly sharper edge. It’s a different way to wear florals, especially if pastels and pretty prints aren’t quite your thing.

WICKEDLY EMERALD

Black may be the obvious choice for a darker palette, but emerald green makes a convincing alternative. Deep, saturated, and impossible to overlook, it’s a color that holds its own. Pair the Maisy top with the matching Madilynn skirt for a head-to-toe look that doesn’t need much else. After all, witches aren’t the only ones who can pull off green.

BEWITCHED IN BLACK

The little black dress has been to enough parties to know a thing or two about dressing up. Give it a gothic-inspired twist without going full Wednesday Addams. Hints of silver sheen across the bodice catch the light, while a lace-trimmed bubble hem adds playful volume. It’s part romantic, part mischievous, and perfectly wearable long after the decorations come down.

Pretty has a dark side, too.

Consider this an excuse to wear something you might not usually reach for. A lace detail, an unusual floral, or a color that feels a bit more daring than your usual choices. Nothing that requires a costume change or a special occasion.

Because some looks deserve more than just one night.
