GHOST MONTH: BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY

Ghost Month is here, bringing with it traditions, superstitions, and plenty of reasons to think twice. Whether you follow every custom or fall firmly into the better safe than sorry camp, there are ways to play along without putting your personal style on hold.
And it doesn’t stop at your wardrobe. What you wear is only part of it. Where you go, what you do, and even what time you do it can come with their own Ghost Month considerations. Think of this as your cheat sheet for what gets a green light and what might be better saved for another day.
First things first: what are we wearing?

COLOR HAS ENTERED THE CHAT
Start with what’s on your rack. Bright shades like red, pink, orange, and yellow are traditionally considered more auspicious, making them an easy way to bring energy into your look. Think a red blouse with tailored trousers, a vibrant dress, or even a statement bag that breaks up a neutral outfit.
BLACK? MAYBE NOT HEAD-TO-TOE
Black may be your forever favorite, but it’s often associated with mourning during Ghost Month. Instead of retiring it completely, break it up. Pair black trousers with a brighter top, throw a colorful layer over a dark dress, or let accessories do the heavy lifting.
WHEN IN DOUBT, ADD A LAYER
Some beliefs advise against overly revealing outfits, particularly when visiting temples, cemeteries, or other spiritual spaces. A little extra coverage doesn’t have to mean playing it safe with your style. Think lightweight layers, longer silhouettes, relaxed tailoring, or a blazer thrown over your usual look.
AFTER DARK? KEEP IT LOW-KEY
Wandering alone late at night, swimming after dark, or visiting isolated places are commonly avoided by those who observe the customs. So if a spontaneous 2 A.M. adventure suddenly sounds tempting, maybe save it for another night.
SOME PLANS CAN WAIT
For those who observe Ghost Month closely, the period is sometimes considered an unfavorable time for major moves such as relocating, renovating a home, starting a business, or making significant financial decisions. You may not follow every custom, but when the stakes are a little higher, playing it safe for a few weeks doesn’t sound so bad.
LEAVE THE NEGATIVE ENERGY BEHIND
If there’s ever a time to give the worn-out pieces in your wardrobe a break, this might be it. Reach for something in better shape instead. And while you’re at it, keep your surroundings tidy and clear out what you no longer need.
You don’t have to spend the month second-guessing every outfit or plan. If a brighter color, an extra layer, or skipping the occasional late-night adventure puts you on the safe side, why not?
A few small swaps, just to keep luck on your side.
