ON-SCREEN LOOKS WE LOVE
Even though Mother's Day has passed, we’re still in an extra sentimental mood. Reflecting on our own experiences growing up, and some of us having experienced motherhood firsthand, we often look to the media we consume for examples of what we aspire to be, and what we don’t aspire to be.
In this article, we’re celebrating our favorite moms in film and TV — moms that embraced their roles with purpose and grace (and in style!), loved their kids with all they had, and gave us all something to appreciate and emulate.
So, bring out your popcorn and notepad, and let's take a moment to honor the most iconic TV and movie matriarchs over the years.
Leigh Anne Tuohy had no time for nonsense which is why we must pay homage to Tuohy’s understated approach to life and fashion. Did she epitomize chic to the nth degree? Absolutely. Her sophisticated style, emphasizing neutral tones and classic silhouettes were simply part of her take-charge personality.
Is Miranda Priestly the best-dressed movie mom ever? Out of all the movie moms? Without a doubt. She’s terrifyingly well-dressed. (And wields such power that she can secure an unpublished manuscript of Harry Potter for her children whenever she wants.) An overlord ‘til the end, she presides over her office in powerhouse suits, oversized sunglasses and enormous fur coats, carried and lifted by the Herculean strength of her employees. As for anything else? Well, that’s all.
The underrated style icon of the show might actually be the queen of casual coquette, Charlotte York. Kristen Davis's portrayal of Charlotte showcased the more demure, subtle and conservative dresser of the group of four. Charlotte stuck to her pretty, preppy aesthetic because she knew it worked for her—and therein lies the power of her approach to fashion. Her style can always be brought back to a few key elements—elegance and class, with a good dose of girly here and there.
Lily’s character, played by Kelly Rutherford, epitomized the quiet luxury style that we all know today. And while she may not have instilled the best values in Serena, she certainly taught her how to dress. The socialite mom at the Upper East Side is everything we aspire to be: sophisticated, elegant and chic. From her designer dresses to casual coats, from timeless staples to polished, refined pieces, Lily always looked nothing less than regal.
A former runway model, Gabrielle Solis, played by Eva Longoria has the most interest in fashion, and her wardrobe reflects that—even when she's running errands. She is very detail oriented. If there's a little thin belt, it usually matches the shoe, which matches the purse. She's always impeccably put together. Though her outfits are flashier than those of the other women on the block, they remain tasteful, and Gabrielle exudes a ton of class.
It’s hard to not be obsessed with Parker Posey’s Victoria Ratliff, who spends majority of her time napping, sunbathing, and casually indulging in her vices—all while wearing a colorful assortment of dresses. Victoria’s wardrobe is a masterclass in understated luxury, blending Southern elegance with resort chic. Her clothing isn’t meant to speak for her. She doesn’t care what other people think, she knows she looks great, and she has nothing to prove.
Prepare to be pulled into the fashionable world of Blake Lively’s Emily Nelson. From the start, her bold aesthetic commands attention: rich, menswear-inspired suits adorned with dazzling details like neckties, pocket squares, and fedoras. The look is intentionally crafted to portray her as a mysterious and powerful figure, with the costuming playing a pivotal role in shaping both her character and the film’s overall tone.
From screen to real life, these iconic matriarchs have shown us that style is just another form of self-love. Whether you’re treating your mom or yourself, let these curated pieces be a reminder that every mom deserves to feel like a leading lady.
